A customer recently visited 1Stop Motor Shop in Mallusk, Newtownabbey, concerned that their vehicle had developed a coolant leak. They had noticed water dripping underneath the car and understandably feared the worst.

After carrying out a full inspection, we found there was no coolant leak at all. The water was simply condensation draining from the air conditioning system, which is completely normal.

Why Is Water Dripping Under My Car?

If you notice clear water underneath your vehicle, especially during warmer weather or after using the air conditioning, it's often nothing to worry about.

In many cases, the water is simply condensation from the air conditioning system draining away as designed.

However, it's still worth getting the vehicle checked if you're unsure.

What We Found During Inspection

This customer believed they had a coolant leak because they noticed fluid underneath the vehicle.

During our inspection we checked:

  • Cooling system
  • Coolant level
  • Radiator
  • Water pump
  • Hoses and pipework

Everything was operating correctly.

The fluid turned out to be condensation draining from the air conditioning evaporator, which is completely normal.

How Can You Tell the Difference Between Water and Coolant?

One of the easiest ways to tell is by looking at the fluid.

Air Conditioning Condensation

  • Clear water
  • No smell
  • Usually appears after using the air conditioning
  • Normal operation

Coolant Leak

  • Pink, orange, green or blue fluid
  • Sweet smell
  • Coolant level gradually drops
  • Engine may begin to overheat

If you're unsure which one you're seeing, it's always best to have it checked professionally.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Book an inspection if you notice:

  • Coolant warning light
  • Engine overheating
  • Sweet smell from the engine bay
  • Coloured fluid underneath the vehicle
  • Coolant reservoir needing topped up regularly

These can all indicate a genuine cooling system fault.
