Diesel smell or rough running engine? You could have leaking injector seals. Learn what causes it, symptoms to watch for, and how we fix it at 1Stop Motor Shop in Newtownabbey.
If your vehicle has been running rough, smells of diesel, or you’re noticing oily residue around the injectors — it could be a case of leaking injector seals.
At 1Stop Motor Shop in Newtownabbey, we’ve seen a rise in injector-related faults across a range of diesel engines, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Early diagnosis and repair can save you from bigger engine problems and costly repairs.
Injector seals (also known as copper washers or fire rings) are small but critical components that seal the fuel injector against the engine’s cylinder head.
If they begin to leak, you might notice:
Black sludge around the injector (carbon build-up)
Diesel smells in the cabin
Chuffing sound from the engine
Excessive smoke
Reduced engine performance
This is often referred to as “black death” in diesel engines.
At our Newtownabbey garage, we check for:
✅ Excessive carbon build-up
✅ Diesel fumes escaping under load
✅ Injector movement or seating issues
✅ Fuel pressure inconsistencies
The video below (from our workshop this week) shows clear signs of fuel and compression leaking from worn injector seals.
We remove the affected injectors, clean the seating area, and replace the old copper seals with new OEM-quality injector washers.
The area is then resealed, torqued to spec, and pressure-tested to ensure no future leaks.
Our team also checks for injector bolt stretch — a common cause of seals failing again shortly after a repair.
