Brake pad worn down to metal and damaged the disc. Grinding noise fixed with new pads and discs at 1Stop Motor Shop in Newtownabbey. Safe and road-ready again.
A car arrived at 1Stop Motor Shop in Newtownabbey after the driver reported a loud grinding sound under braking. Once we got it on the ramp, the issue was instantly clear — the brake pads had worn down completely to the metal, and were cutting into the brake disc (see image).
This kind of wear doesn’t just reduce braking power — it destroys the disc, leads to vibration, and creates a major safety risk.
If you ignore squealing or brake warning lights, you can end up with:
Metal-on-metal grinding
Deep scoring on the brake disc
Heat damage or warping
Longer stopping distances
Brake fade or complete failure
In this case, the pad backing plate had scored deep grooves into the disc surface. The only option? Replace both the discs and pads.
We:
Removed the worn-out pads and damaged discs
Fitted brand new discs and pads
Checked caliper function and brake fluid levels
Test drove for safety and smooth stopping
We also gave the customer advice on brake maintenance intervals to avoid this in future.
