Classic Triumph Spitfire engine tuned at 1Stop Motor Shop in Newtownabbey. We overhauled the ignition system and cleaned the carbs. Back to smooth, classic performance.
You don’t see many of these on the roads anymore! A classic Triumph Spitfire rolled into 1Stop Motor Shop for a bit of much-needed attention. It was struggling to start and idle and also felt rough on acceleration — classic signs that the ignition and fuelling systems needed work.
We began with a full check of the ignition system:
New spark plugs fitted
Replaced worn distributor cap
Checked and replaced all HT leads
Adjusted ignition timing for smooth running
These basics alone made a noticeable difference in idle quality and firing consistency.
Next, we tackled the carburettors, which were gummed up and showing signs of poor fuel delivery:
Fully stripped and cleaned both carbs
Reassembled with fresh gaskets
Balanced for smooth idle and throttle response
We also inspected the fuel lines and breather hoses — a crucial step for any classic undergoing a revival.
If you’re driving a classic vehicle around Belfast or Newtownabbey, you’ll know that regular tuning is essential:
Modern fuels gum up old carburettors
Points and distributors wear out
Ignition timing needs manual adjustment
Dirty plugs = misfiring and rough idle
This Triumph now sounds crisp and clean, and it’s ready to get back on the road with a proper classic roar.
