Car came in with EML and slight idle misfire. Diagnostics showed camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault — timing chain replaced at 1Stop Motor Shop, Newtownabbey.
A car came into 1Stop Motor Shop in Newtownabbey with the Engine Management Light (EML) on and a slight misfire at idle. The driver was concerned about performance and fuel economy. After plugging in our diagnostic tools, we uncovered correlation faults for both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors.
That’s a tell-tale sign that the timing chain has stretched or jumped, and it’s no longer keeping the engine in sync.
Modern engines rely on precise timing between the crankshaft and camshaft. When the chain begins to stretch or skip:
Valve and piston timing are thrown off
The engine starts to misfire or run rough
EML codes are triggered
Long-term damage can occur if ignored
This fault usually shows up first as rough idling, hesitation when starting, or odd noises from the timing chain area.
If you’re around Belfast or Newtownabbey and notice:
Rattling noise at idle
Engine misfire or EML on
Loss of power or hesitation
Poor fuel economy
Trouble starting
You might be due a timing chain inspection or replacement — especially on higher-mileage vehicles.
We confirmed the fault using diagnostics and live data tracking, then stripped the engine to inspect the timing system. The chain showed clear signs of wear and slack. We replaced the:
Timing chain
Tensioner and guides
Cam/crank sensors (if required)
Fresh oil and filter change
After reassembly and a test drive, the misfire was gone and the engine was back running smooth — with no warning lights in sight.
