Car recovered to the garage with multiple fault codes

This vehicle arrived at 1Stop Motor Shop in Mallusk as a non-runner, displaying multiple fault codes across different systems and refusing to start at all.

When cars present like this, it’s rarely a single simple issue. Multiple fault codes often point to a central electrical or control problem, rather than individual component failures.

In-depth diagnosis revealed ECU water damage

After carrying out extended electrical diagnostics and physical inspections, we traced the issue back to the engine ECU.

On removal, we found:

  • Severe corrosion inside the ECU plug

  • Water ingress affecting the pins and terminals

  • Poor electrical continuity between the ECU and engine systems

The ECU connector had filled with water over time, causing corrosion that prevented the ECU from communicating correctly with the vehicle.

Why ECU water damage causes starting issues

Modern cars rely heavily on the ECU to control fuel delivery, ignition timing, sensors and security systems.
When water enters the ECU or its connectors, it can lead to:

  • No-start conditions

  • Random or misleading fault codes

  • Loss of communication with key sensors

  • Intermittent electrical faults

  • Complete engine shutdown

This type of fault cannot be fixed by clearing codes alone — the underlying corrosion must be addressed.

Can water damage to an ECU be repaired?

Answer: In many cases, yes — but it depends on the severity.

An ECU water damage repair may involve:

  • Cleaning and de-corroding ECU pins

  • Repairing or replacing damaged connectors

  • Resealing the ECU housing

  • Restoring wiring integrity

  • In some cases, ECU replacement and coding

Early diagnosis greatly improves the chance of repair and reduces overall cost.

A complex repair requiring time and experience

This job involved a significant amount of diagnostic time and careful repair work. ECU-related faults are among the most time-consuming electrical issues to resolve properly, especially when water ingress is involved.

Thanks to methodical testing and experience with complex electrical systems, we were able to identify the root cause and carry out the necessary repairs to get the vehicle running again.
